Navigating life after a difficult upbringing can be a challenging process. Waking up every day with painful memories of your past ingrained in your mind can feel like a roadblock to the future you deserve. If you are still yearning for success or struggling to find purpose in your life, you might have considered whether choosing to join the military could provide a new direction.

Why Consider Joining the Military?

Joining the military can let you travel, gain new life experience, make a positive impact, and learn accountability alongside peers. If you simply feel this is your calling to serve your country, it might be your sign to move forward. Whatever draws your desire to join the armed forces, there are a few things to consider before moving forward.

What is the Military?

The military is a highly structured force that protects a country from foreign adversaries. It is authorized by the U.S. government to perform different tasks to defend and protect citizens from foreign and domestic threats.

To illustrate, specific defense equipment is needed to protect America from an act of war and defend its national security. Research indicates that the Department of Defense (DoD) is a U.S. organization that is responsible for providing the armed forces with highly specialized resources to do so.

What are the Different Branches of the Military?

The major elements of the military involve approximately 1.3 million active personnel. In case of a global emergency, both men and women on active duty are reinforced by about 835,000 members of the Reserve and National Guard. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, the military is made up of different branches, including the following:

  • Army: Focuses primarily on land-based military operations.
  • Marine Corps: Conducts expeditionary operations and specializes in amphibious warfare.
  • Navy: Conducts military operations at sea and supports maritime security.
  • Air Force: Conducts air and space-related military operations.
  • Space Force:  Focuses on military operations and capabilities in space.
  • Coast Guard: Protects U.S. waterways and conducts maritime security, safety, and law-enforcement missions.
  • National Guard: Supports domestic emergencies and can also serve in federal military operations when activated.

Join the Military: Benefits Explained

If you want to join the armed forces, it can be wise to break down the military benefits. Research illustrates that the military has a diverse range of benefits that include a commissary, complete health care options, and exchange shopping. The benefits you gain in the military can sometimes be better than the services offered by the private sector.

For example, the core benefits provided by some private sector firms include life insurance, health care, and paid time off. If you have faced significant challenges early on, a military benefits package can provide a greater sense of financial and personal security in adulthood. Additional advantages that can come from joining the military include the following:

  • College funds

  • VA benefits
  • Vacation

When deciding on whether you want to move forward with the military, it is important to consider a few things. For example, the eligibility benefits often vary between branches. Familiarize yourself with them to decide if it is the right fit for you. Consider the level of dedication and sacrifice, as the military requires serious commitment. The structured routine of military life can help you build healthy habits, develop discipline, and remain focused on your goals for a greater future. Additional things to consider include the following:
